
Mt Kilimanjaro, known as Africa’s greatest mountain, and considered the world’s highest free standing mountain, is a natural wonder that will literally take your breath away. Located in Tanzania, it is a major attraction, & draws scores of people from all over the world annually, who come to view it, trek on it or try to summit it. It is comprised of three volcanic cones, namely Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest peak, standing at elevations of 5,895 metres above sea level.
Popular Activities you can do when you visit Kilimanjaro
- ‘Days of trekking the mountain’, is one of the popular activities. The easiest route is called the Marangu route and it is the most popular. There is also the Machame Route, but this is relatively harder. (Please note that Solo trekking is not allowed)
- Camping: One interesting activity is camping in the many base camps on the mountain while you attempt to summit it, or reach certain points.
- Hiking
- Game viewing: Kilimanjaro National Park also houses several wild animals which include elephants, buffalos, elands, etc
- Viewing the Shira Plateau
- Visiting the nearby Masai Communities for cultural enrichment
What you need to know
- The most predominant language spoken is KiSwahili (English is also understood by a significant population)
- Greeting locals by saying “Jambo” instead of saying “Hello/hi” will likely earn you new Tanzanian friends.
- Most wear colourful, flowing clothing as part of the culture
- Accommodation, Lodges, Hotels there range from $50 to $500 on average. But it can be way cheaper for those who want a modest village camping experience.
- Local currency used is the Tanzanian Shilling, which is rated at 2,340 per 1 US Dollar
- The main airport is the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) which is about 469 km away from Mt Kilimanjaro. There is the nearest airport which is Kilimanjaro International Airport. Most Commercial regular flights though, use the JNIA.
- You can catch another flight from JNIA to Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is a less than an hour flight on average.
